Thankful today for my freedom. And for those who fought and sacrificed for that freedom. Freedom that I take for granted every day.

I want to be mindful of those who don’t enjoy the same privileges that this freedom affords me. The freedom to speak my mind not only privately, but publicly as well, without the fear of retribution. The freedom to be whoever and whatever I choose to be. The freedom to live without being negatively labeled because the neighborhood I grew up in or the size of my bank account. Because of the color of my skin or my sexual orientation.

I want to exercise my freedom in ways that don’t marginalize those around me. Nothing makes me better than anyone else. Certainly not the fact that I live in America. My prayer is that I don’t abuse that privilege or lord it over anyone else.

May I be willing to always see opportunities where I can serve others. May I let freedom ring in ways that honor others as well as myself and Christ, however that may play out.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela
